In May 2010, our team hosted an event at High Tech High for contributors to the City of San Diego, alongside several local FRC teams (teams 1538 and 1266). We introduced important members of our city, including the mayor of San Diego, mayor of Chula Vista, San Diego school board, and other assorted community members, to FIRST, and impressed upon them the importance of emphasizing robotics and STEM programs in school.
Our hope was to excite the mayors and board members about robotics, and we certainly did! Attendees had a great time at this event; they drove our 2008-09 competition bot, Roxie, and it was really exciting to watch. A lot of the representatives patiently waited for their turn to drive the robot made by kids. All of them said it was harder than it looked and were amazed that we had created it on our own. It was wonderful to hear that they were interested in the FIRST program.
Mayor Sanders and Mayor Cox also honored us by declaring October 17th "FIRST Day" in San Diego and Chula Vista; this is an event that we are excited to hold annually, and we are deeply greatful to the mayors for this proclamation.
