During the San Diego FRC competition at the Sports Arena, we set up our own station in the entry way. When the people were crowding in to go see the large robots, their eyes would be drawn to our VEX field set up. As they came up to us, curious with questions, we happily answered and talked about what we do as Einstein’s Daughters. There were six robots available for kids to use and play with. We had these robots so that they would be able to have a hands-on experience about how the VEX robots work. By the middle of the day there was a line of kids wanting to drive the robots and huge crowds of parents stood behind them. With all the children driving the robots, we were continuously trying to tighten motors and find charged batteries. Though our robots had glitches and minor problems, what could have been a negative ended up being a positive because the kids and parents got to see how we repair these robots. When the day was coming to an end, there was a variety of kids asking how to start teams and talking about how much they loved robotics and we continuously referred them to the FIRST website.

We encouraged our little brother team, Cold Fusion, to come along with us to the San Diego Sports Arena and do their own bit of community service. These boys ran their own table and showed kids closer to their age how they can get involved in the FLL division of robotics. They had some kids try and make their own creation with legos and showed them how the field is set up. This was great because only kids in middle and high school can join FTC, but we could have younger kids talk to Cold Fusion about FLL. They did great sharing the word about FIRST.
