Brainstorming...
Brainstorming is a lateral thinking process often used by groups to problem solve or develop new ideas. During a brainstorming session, the group is asked to think outside the box and come up with ideas that solve a particular problem. Some ideas that are generated might seem crazy or a bit unusual, but that's fine, it's great. This “craziness” increases the number of possible solutions and allows for better and more thorough solutions .
Why use brainstorming to solve problems?
Brainstorming can be a very effective way for a group to solve a problem. It draws from the experience and creativity of all members of the group and tends to develop ideas that are more in-depth and creative. When individual members reach their limit on an idea, another member's creativity and experience can take the idea to the next stage.
What does it take to lead a group in brainstorming?
• Define the task/problem clearly – make sure to include any specific criteria that must be met (e.g., deadlines, cost, size, objective)
• Keep the group focused on the problem at hand. Don’t get sidetracked by ideas for other problems.
• Keep it positive. During a brainstorming session there are no bad ideas. Don’t allow other group members to criticize ideas. Keeping it positive allows the creative juices to keep flowing.
• Build on ideas that have been presented. If group members seem to be running out of ideas, encourage them to build on ideas already present.
• Don’t allow one group member to control the group by focusing exclusively on their idea. Encourage everyone to contribute and develop ideas. Then at the end look back to the ideas that the group as a whole like best or think will be best to solve the problem.
• Appoint one person to take down notes. Keep notes from the brainstorming session for future reference.
• Most of all, allow group members to have fun during the brainstorming process. It helps everyone’s ideas get out no matter how crazy they might seem.
At the Jenna Druck Foundation our team held a brainstorming workshop during which we used the following work sheet to teach the girls how to brainstorm and solve an idea as a group.
